The announcement came just as US and Iraqi forces advanced on the city of more than two million, a major ISIS stronghold.
US Central Command said it had sent the additional troops "to help accelerate the pace of operations in support of our Iraqi partners as they plan for and conduct a planned, deliberate and synchronised operation to liberate and clear" the city.
It did not specify the number of troops sent, which it said would not be the same as the roughly 8,000 troops in the country at the peak of US military involvement in Iraq in 2015.
Shortly after the announcement, a US defense official told AFP that the US troops would be involved in "force protection" missions.
"They are not currently involved in operations against ISIS or anyone else," the official added, referring to Islamic State by another acronym.
The US army sent nearly 6,000 soldiers to Iraq at the height of its involvement in the war in 2015.
Pentagon officials, however, have said that the military had come to a "threshold" in which it could send significant numbers of troops back to Iraq.
The announcement on Monday added to signs that the US-led coalition was preparing to scale back its presence there.
In June, the coalition announced it was reducing troop levels in Iraq by more than half, from the roughly 8,000 troops it had in the country when the US invasion of Iraq began in 2003 to about 3,870.
US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said last week that the coalition would have the capacity to send in new troops to support the offensive.
